NW man arrested for selling illicit cigarettes─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 08:18 Sun, 10 May 2020
A 26-year-old North West suspect was arrested after he was found in possession of illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of R200 000.
The suspect was apprehended on Friday at his business premises for selling cigarettes in contravention of lockdown regulations.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Stilfontein Magistrate's Court soon.
His court appearance will come amidst growing concerns in South Africa over the ban on cigarette sales during lockdown.
Government says the ban on alcohol and cigarette sales was established to attempt to flatten the coronavirus curve.
Meanwhile, Police Minister, Bheki Cele, announced that they are aware of the smuggling of cigarettes and alcohol taking place within the country and across borders.
He said they are concerned that citizens are undermining lockdown regulations and warned those found contravening these regulations will be arrested.
