NW MEC calls for speedy arrests after school fire | News Article

No suspects have been arrested yet after the torching of the Machama Primary School's administration block near Moruleng in the North West earlier this week. A case of arson has been opened.

The Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela, says she is dismayed by the incident and is pleading for the speedy arrest of the culprits. She says the destruction at schools will have a negative impact towards the education of learners. She adds that communities must be responsible and look after that particular school. The department's spokesperson, Elias Malindi, says the administration block consisted of ten offices which were all burned down. He says the damaged property includes furniture, workbooks, textbooks, printers, sports attire, and sports equipment, amongst others.

Since the start of the lockdown, more than 100 schools were vandalised and burglarised in the North West, he concluded.
