The North West Department of Health's coronavirus tracing team has launched a search for the suspected contacts linked to a doctor who tested positive for Covid-19 in the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital.
The MEC for Health, Madoda Sambatha, says the department has begun a process of tracing about 260 of the people he came into contact with. He says this includes 14 doctors, 195 patients, 22 staff members and 29 nurses at three medical facilities, which include his own private facility and the Victoria Private Hospital. The doctor now forms part of more than five medical personnel in the province who have tested positive for Covid-19 across the province while in the frontline of the battle against the virus.
Sambatha says so far the department has successfully traced 690 of the 722 contacts of the 52 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the province, which now only has 27 active cases and one reported death.
He further adds that this represents a success rate of 96%. Only 3 contacts tested positive for Covid-19 and a total of 466 contacts have completed a monitoring period of 14 days .
"At Victoria hospital, the doctor's contacts include 22 staff members, 2 doctors and 21 patients. At his private practice he had contact with 104 patients. At the Mahikeng Hospital, the doctor had contact with 12 doctors, 29 nurses and 70 patients," Sambatha continues.
While addressing the media on Wednesday 13 May, Sambatha announced that this doctor also forms part of 12 employees who were confirmed Covid-19 positive. He said so far six were from private facilities and six from public services.
