The provincial Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson, Tlangelani Rikhotso, says on two separate events, the four suspects were arrested for illicit cigarettes earlier this week.

She says in the first incident, a 37-year-old man was arrested in Potchefstroom for allegedly transporting illicit cigarettes worth R180 000. She says the man allegedly tried to offer the police R30 000 in cash to evade arrest. The cigarettes and cash were confiscated and he was subsequently arrested.

In the second incident, three men aged between 30 and 37 were also arrested during a roadblock with illicit cigarettes worth approximately R380 000. Rikhotso says the three allegedly attempted to offer the police officers a R10 000 cash bribe. The cigarettes and the cash were also confiscated and they were also arrested.
