Cele to give update on police's #SAlockdown progress | News Article

The number of arrests and fines handed to people not adhering to the Covid-19 lockdown regulations will be the key focus of the Police Minister Bheki Cele's expected virtual media briefing on Friday at 14:00.

Cele's spokesperson, Mathapelo Peters, says he will provide an update on how far the police have come in enforcing the COVID-19 Disaster Management Lockdown Regulations. She says this follows his visits to all nine provinces to assess the enforcement and compliance to the regulations. Peters adds that Cele will also speak about the firearm amnesty period which is about to expire at the end of May.

OFM News previously reported that a total of 17 209 people were arrested between 15 March and 2 April 2020, for not adhering to the lockdown regulations. The Free State province was the second highest, trailing with 3 098 arrests behind the Western Cape with 4 769.

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape had 832 arrests and the North West had 1 562 arrests. The offences varied between transport-related, liquor-related and general non-compliance with the regulations.
