NCOP to engage with NC women to address challenges | News Article

Former Northern Cape Premier and the now Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Sylvia Lucas will next week lead a parliamentary review of the Women’s Charter in the province.

The nationwide review consultative process, which kicked off in the Western Cape, is expected to shed more light on the issues faced by women in the Northern Cape and measures that needs to be taken to address them. This includes escalating cases of gender-based violence, child abuse and economic challenges faced by women in the province and in the country at large.

The NCOP in a statement highlights that during the first consultative process in the Western Cape, the community not only raised concerns regarding violence against women and children, but also "expressed concerns about the perceived ineffectiveness of the criminal justice system, as perpetrators usually come back into society after brief arrests to continue with their acts of brutality".

Parliament's Moloto Mothapo says access to business opportunities for women is also another issue that was raised. He says women requested that Parliament pass laws that comply with the vision of the Freedom Charter in the interest of developing women in business.

The nationwide review of the Women’s Charter in the Northern Cape is expected to take place virtually from May 26 to June 9 in adherence to the lockdown regulations set to curb the spread of the Coronavirus.

Women across all parts of the province will be afforded an opportunity to engage with the NCOP and voice their concerns.
