NW teenager arrested for school burglary─── MARVIN NTSANE 12:11 Mon, 25 May 2020
The North West police are investigating a 17-year-old teenage boy accused of a school burglary at a high school in Makapanstad on Friday 22 May 2020.
The police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, says the school's security guard was on night duty when she heard a suspicious noise. Upon investigation she saw three intruders on the school roof. These intruders jumped and fled on foot.
Myburgh says the community caught the boy and handed him over to the police. She says he was processed according to the Child Justice Act and was released in the care of his parents. She adds that the police are following up on information about the other two suspects who are also minors.
According to Myburgh, the Provincial Commissioner, Sello Kwena, applauded the community and security guard for their collaboration which led to the arrest. "He further urges the community to report suspicious activities at schools by contacting their nearest police stations or calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111," she said.
OFM News previously reported that since the start of the lockdown, more than 100 schools were vandalised and burglarised in this province. The department's spokesperson Elias Malindi said most of the stolen property include furniture, workbooks, textbooks, printers, sports attire, and feeding scheme groceries, amongst others.
