NCOP to engage with NC women | News Article

The Northern Cape's leg of Parliament's review of the 1994 Women’s Charter for Effective Equality will officially kick-off in the ZF Magcawu District on Tuesday.

The consultative process, set to be led by the former Northern Cape Premier who is now the Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Sylvia Lucas, will shed more light on the plight faced by women in this province.

Amidst the Coronavirus breakout, women in the province will on Tuesday be able to share their experiences and engage MPs on how the pandemic has not only affected their lives, but their source of income.

Parliament's Moloto Mothapo confirms this nationwide review consultative process kicked off in the Western Cape, where women sharply raised concerns over escalating cases of Gender Based Violence, child abuse, and economic challenges they are faced with.

He said women in this province requested that Parliament pass laws that comply with the vision of the Freedom Charter in the interest of developing women in businesses and ensuring that they participate in the economy of the country.

He outlined that during the first consultative process in the Western Cape, the community expressed concerns about the perceived ineffectiveness of the criminal justice system, as perpetrators are said to continue abusing women after their brief arrests.

The nationwide review of the Women’s Charter in the Northern Cape is expected to take place until June 9.
