Review of Women’s Charter underway in NC─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:34 Tue, 26 May 2020
More needs to be done to ensure gender equality in South Africa. This is according to the former Northern Cape Premier and the now Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Sylvia Lucas.
Leading Parliament's nationwide review of the 1994 Women’s Charter for Effective Equality in the Northern Cape's ZF Magcawu District this morning, Lucas says it remains crucial for the country to develop policies that will ensure that women from all walks of life are protected. She says it remains highly important for women to be prioritised while the country fights against the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment.
Lucas explains the nationwide review of the 1994 Women’s Charter is to further enable women in different parts of the country to make their voices heard, to enable them to highlight challenges they are faced with 26 years post democracy and to enable parliament to make amendments.
OFM News previously reported that the review of the Women’s Charter in the Northern Cape is expected to take place virtually until June 9.
Issues pertaining to gender-based violence (GBV), lack of access to basic municipal services and lack of access to job opportunities in the Northern Cape are amongst some of the key challenges expected to be brought to the forefront.
Lucas has meanwhile urged those who cannot participate in these virtual meetings to make written submissions to parliament as soon as possible.
