The Public Servants Association (PSA) in the Free State has expressed disappointment at the level of unpreparedness for the reopening of schools by the provincial education department.

The association says no personal protective equipment (PPE) or sanitisers have been delivered to various schools, nor has there been any deep cleaning of classrooms.

The association has further expressed concern at the lack of water and sanitation at various schools - particularly those in Qwa Qwa, stating that occupational health and safety regulations are seemingly not in place in various districts.

Their statement comes amidst nationwide growing concerns over the Basic Education Department's readiness to reopen schools for the Grade 12 and seven learners on June 1.

"The PSA has received confirmation from members and shop stewards that government schools around all the districts have not yet been disinfected or deep cleaned.

"It is the PSA’s position that the department, in collaboration with all labour unions, conduct a survey of all the schools to assess the level of compliance as outlined in the relevant legislations and directives. It is clear that despite the commitments made by the HOD, expecting staff to go back to work is extremely risky and irresponsible," read the statement.

On Monday, OFM News sent the department a set to questions regarding the return of teachers to schools and the state of readiness for the reopening of schools, but the department has not responded.

Education Spokersperson, Howard Ndaba, could only confirm they will hold a media briefing soon, without revealing any other details.
