#CoronavirusNC: PSA firm about school compliance─── MARVIN NTSANE 16:31 Tue, 26 May 2020
The Public Servants Association (PSA) in the Northern Cape says the Department of Education has failed to adequately prepare schools in the ZF Mgcawu District - which includes the town of Upington.
PSA spokesperson, Steve Ledibane, says this failure is a complete disregard for Covid-19 regulation and people's lives. He says PSA advices members to stay at home if the safety recommendations are not complied with.
Ledibane says in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district, 30 out of 176 schools were vandalised and no repairs have taken place. He adds that in the Pixley Ka Seme, Namakwa and Francis Baard Districts the schools received inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE) and no additional cleaners have been appointed.
He has further called on the MEC of education, Mac Jack, and the head of the department, Tshepo Pharasi, to ensure the reopening is properly done.
Meanwhile, Jack is expected to outline the progress of the preparations for the return of learners in schools tomorrow. This comes as grade seven and 12 are expected to return to school when the country enters lockdown level 3 on Monday, June 1.
