#CoronavirusNC: #Covid19 cases linked to Eastern Cape─── LUCKY NKUYANE 07:51 Thu, 28 May 2020
The Northern Cape has become the latest province in Central South Africa to record Coronavirus (Covid-19) cases linked to the Eastern Cape and Western Cape respectively.
This follows in the wake of North West also announcing that five miners, returning to work, were confirmed positive for Covid-19 after being linked to the Eastern Cape Province.
The Northern Cape Department of Health spokesperson, Lebohang Majaha, says the three additional cases announced by Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, on Wednesday evening are all healthcare workers.
He adds all three workers were tested as part of a screening programme for healthcare workers.
The provincial Covid-19 tracing team confirmed that the infections were not contracted in the workplace.
Majaha further adds two of the confirmed positive patients had a travel history to the Eastern Cape and one to the Western Cape.
Meanwhile, the province has so far recorded 17 active cases of the virus after 30 people recovered, and one death was reported from 48 reported cases.
"We can confirm that the Northern Cape has three new COVID-19 positive individuals as announced by the Minister of Health. They are all from the Pixley ka Seme District. The three confirmed cases are as follows; one person from the Ubuntu Local Municipality, and two people from the Umsobomvu Local Municipality," he adds.
Three districts in the province - which include Frances Baard - have eight active cases; six in Pixley-ka-Seme and three in ZF Mgcawu.
The department has also pleaded with residents not to travel outside the province unless it is an emergency.
"We understand how difficult this may be, but keeping the low incidence of Covid-19 in the province is a key task for us all. If people need to travel they should always observe infection prevention measures as far as possible, wear a mask at all times, wash their hands often, use sanitiser and do not touch your face if at all possible," Majaha further adds.
