Maluti-A-Phofung infrastructure challenges a concern

Maluti-A-Phofung infrastructure challenges a concern | News Article

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC in the Free State, Thembeni Nxangisa, says the financial state of the Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality is still a cause of concern.

This, as residents have once again called on his department to attend to water and electricity challenges faced on the ground. Nxangisa says they are attending to several infrastructure issues in the Maluti-A-Phofung areas as some water projects' infrastructure have aged and others have been stolen. He says although they are still facing a number of issues regarding service delivery, he is confident that the municipality has stabilised politically and that employees' third party payments are now being paid. This includes payment of the monthly Eskom debt. The municipality has for years been regarded the biggest defaulter with more than R4 billion Eskom debt and more than R3 billion water board debt. As the country continues to fight against the spread of the coronavirus, water challenges faced in the Maluti-A-Phofung schools and communities have once again raised eyebrows.

OFM News earlier this week reported on concerns raised by Public Servants Association (PSA) regarding lack of water and sanitation at schools within the municipality as the country prepares to phase in the re-opening of schools as of 1 June.

The Association said there is still a high need for adequate sanitation and water tankers at schools in Maluti-A-Phofung before schools could re-open.

Nxangisa, says they have acknowledged service delivery issues in the Maluti-A-Phofung areas and can assure the public that they are still attending to them.
