A 25-year-old man arrested in possession of stolen copper cable in Welkom in the Free State will appear before the Local Magistrate's Court tomorrow.

Police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, says the 25-year-old was arrested during the early hours of this morning in the vicinity of Mantshebo Primary School. Mbambo says two SAPS members were patrolling the streets of Thabong when they received a tip-off about men with copper cable in their possession. Upon their investigation, they noticed about five men who dropped the items they were carrying and ran away from the scene when they saw the police. Mbambo says during the police chase one of them was arrested with a long copper cable.

"The suspect was arrested and will be charged for possession of suspected stolen copper cable under the Criminal Matters Act and other charges such as the Disaster Management Act 16 (1) for failure to confine in place of residence," she added.

Constable Itumeleng Dibe and Johannes Faber have since been applauded for the arrest.
