Former NC municipal official arrested─── LUCKY NKUYANE 14:29 Fri, 29 May 2020
A former Umsobomvu municipal official and his wife have been arrested for allegedly defrauding the local Northern Cape municipality of R2.3 million.
The couple were arrested by members of the Hawks serious commercial crime investigation in Colesburg on Thursday. The Hawks provincial spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, says the former chief financial clerk allegedly stole R2.3 million between 2015 and 2018.
She says the suspect is suspected to have transferred money from the municipal account to him and his wife’s personal bank accounts. Mnisi says further investigation revealed that the man seemingly also used the municipality account to settle a personal loan.
Both suspects are expected to appear in the Colesberg Magistrate court on Friday on charges of fraud, theft and money laundering.
