A couple that allegedly defrauded the Umsobomvu Local Municipality in the Northern Cape was granted R5 000 bail each, following their court appearance on Friday.
The duo appeared at the Colesburg Magistrate's Court on charges of fraud, theft and money laundering after being arrested by members of the Hawks on Thursday.
Sivulyile Stali, who is the former chief clerk at the municipality, and his wife Vivian Nolufezo Stali, allegedly stole R2.3 million from the municipality's coffers. The husband allegedly stole the money between 2015 and 2018 and transferred it from the municipal account to him and his wife’s personal bank accounts.
He allegedly also used the municipal account to settle a personal loan. Meanwhile, the provincial Hawks spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, says the couple will re-appear at the Colesburg Magistrate's court on July 6.
