A 57-year-old man is expected to appear in the Mogwase Magistrate's Court in Rustenburg, North West, today for illegal mining activities.
The Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation's (DPCI) provincial spokesperson, Tlangelani Rikhotso, says a joint operation between the Flying Squad, the Department of Mineral Resources and the South Africa National Defence Force led to his arrest at a mining site over the weekend.
Rikhotso says the other suspects fled the scene when they saw the police. She adds that 170 tons of chrome and trucks worth approximately R2.6 million were seized.
He will, amongst others, face charges of illegal mining.
