#CoronavirusNW: School closes as principal tests positive | News Article

A North West school closed after its 56-year-old principal tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Tuesday.

The Department of Education in the province confirmed and announced this on Wednesday morning. This comes just five days before school pupils in the province and across the country are set to return to school.

The MEC for Education, Wendy Matsemela, in a statement says the principal was confirmed positive on Tuesday after visiting the doctor. Matsemela says the principal, as a result, was immediately subjected to 14 days self-quarantine following the confirmation of the result.

"On Monday 1 June 2020, the school principal reported that he was not feeling well and decided to see a doctor. On arrival, the doctor suggested a test for COVID-19 since the school principal was showing symptoms," she further says.

Matsemela adds that as the department they are shocked to learn about this news. The departments of Education and Health are already attending to the matter and the school has been closed with immediate effect.

"We will be relying on their expert advice throughout this period and the school will not be opened until all necessary investigations have been concluded," Matsemela further adds.

So far the province has 211 active cases after 59 recoveries, one death was reported from 271 cases.
