Monkeys held in illegal captive manner─── 08:36 Thu, 04 Jun 2020
The team of the Bloemfontein SPCA came across two monkeys being kept in small cages.
The cages were very dirty and full of faeces, creating a parasitic living environment for these animals.
These monkeys do not belong in a cage at all. They are wild animals and deserve the freedom of nature. Instead, they had to live day in and day out in small cages not suitable for them in any way.
There was no food and water available for these poor monkeys. They were very dehydrated and emaciated due to a lack of food and water.
They were so hungry that they stormed us when we neared the cages. The monkeys were confiscated and taken to Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinarian Hospital where they will receive the necessary treatment. A case of Animal Cruelty was opened against the owner of the monkeys.
We, as the Bloemfontein SPCA, believe that wild animals should stay in the wild.
Please report to us if you know of anyone keeping a wild animal captive. They do not deserve to be caged!
We thank Dr Karin Lourens for her dedication to all our wildlife animals.
