Government has decided to appeal the North Gauteng High Court decision that lockdown Levels 3 and 4 are unconstitutional and invalid.

Minister in the Presidency, Jackson Mthembu said Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will be joined in this appeal by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

"We are of the view that another court will come to a different conclusion on the matter", Mthembu said on Thursday.

The High Court in Pretoria handed down this judgment on Tuesday 2 June.

The total number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in South Africa stands at 37,525 with 792 deaths.

The health department announced that a total of 761,534 tests have been conducted to date.

The Western Cape still has the highest number of positive cases with 24,657 cases followed by Gauteng with 4,567 cases and the Eastern Cape with 4,526 cases.
