Veld fires investigated as cause of collisions in NW | News Article

Motorists driving on the N12 at Potchefstroom in the North West have already experienced the adverse conditions caused by this winter season's veld fires.

This follows several collisions after these fires broke out and allegedly obstructed the visibility of motorists, who in turn collided with one another, leaving them with moderate to critical injuries.

This week alone the medical emergency services ER24 reported at least two collisions between motor vehicles in the area. The JB Marks Municipality spokesperson, Willie Maphosa, confirms that one such incident was recorded on Monday when two vehicles collided in a smoke-logged area, allegedly caused by a fire which started in the Highveld National Park next to the N12.

On Thursday, four vehicles collided on the N12, approximately 15km outside of Potchefstroom towards Klerksdorp, where an 8-month-old baby and six other people were left injured.

Maphosa says with regards to the Monday accident, the municipality is investigating a case where it is suspected a veld fire have caused the smoke.

"Since Monday 1 June 2020, the fire services are awaiting all applications for fire breaks. Applicants should contact the control room at 018 299 5347, alternatively call 018 299 5343 from Monday the 8th,’’ he adds.
