As temperatures continue to drop this winter season, the Mangaung Metro Municipality in the Free State is urging residents to be cautious when using heaters and other apparatuses to keep warm.

Municipal spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, says whilst the city has put in place a fire management plan to ensure that they are ready for any eventualities, they would like to encourage all residents to refrain from leaving paraffin stoves, fireplaces and electric apparatuses unattended.

He says they have recorded the loss of two children in the Khayelitsha area since the start of the season.

Working on Fire’s spokesperson, Wayne Mokhethi, has meanwhile also sent a warning against starting open fires.

He told OFM News at least four veld fires broke out in the province just this past week with their firefighters having to be dispatched to the areas of Bethlehem, Qwaqwa, Warden and Thaba Nchu to contain fires that were burning concurrently.

Mokhethi has urged all communities, including farmers in the Free State, to be cautious when starting open fires and to take note of the Fire Danger Indexes at all times.
