Two men were arrested by the South African Police Services (SAPS) in the North West on suspicion of burglary at schools.

This, as theft and vandalism in schools across the province made headlines during the national lockdown due to the coronavirus.

The arrest of the duo prompted the reaction of the premier, Job Mokgoro, who thanked the police for making these arrests.

Mokgoro says the suspects were arrested in Sunrise Park in Rustenburg on Monday night following a series of school break-ins. He says various items were seized.

Mokgoro adds a 32-year-old man was found in possession of a projector as well as six cell phones while the second suspect in the same area was also found in possession of a projector and twelve cell phones. Police are said to have also recovered a laptop in Modderspruit at Brits near Rustenburg.

Mokgoro further urged the community to provide any information to the police that may lead to the arrest of more suspects.

He earlier announced that repairs to at least 58 vandalised schools in the province will cost the province more than R50 000 per school.

Earlier, schools across the country saw a wave of theft and vandalism and 71 of those vandalised schools are in the North West.

At least 69 schools have already been repaired, according to Mokgoro.
