Maluti-A-Phofung #WaterCrisis: Department vows progress─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 10:10 Thu, 18 Jun 2020
"Drought relief and Covid-19 intervention projects in the Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality in the Free State are progressing remarkably well."
This is according to the Department of Water and Sanitation. The department has applauded Sedibeng Water for the implementation of projects aimed at resolving the water crisis in the area, stating that given the many challenges faced in the area, the water board has "performed remarkably towards the successful implementation of the department's drought relief projects". The water board was appointed as the implementing agent by the national department following sporadic protests over lack of water supply with Minister Lindiwe Sisulu allocating R200 million for the water crisis in the municipality.
The cash-strapped municipality listed as one of the biggest Eskom defaulters, made national headlines when the town came to a complete standstill with schools and businesses shut down at the beginning of the year after the tragic death of an eight-year-old girl, Mosa Mbele, who drowned while fetching water at a river.
Sisulu then announced that the Department’s intervention would be an allocation of R200 million and 5 000 water tankers to address the situation.
The department in a statement now says 2000 water tanks for temporary access to clean water has been provided, and maintenance of water infrastructure and rehabilitation of boreholes is underway. It highlights that employment opportunities for locals has also been created through these projects.
"Sedibeng Water has appointed contractors to provide services to expedite the implementation of the drought relief projects. As part of the 30% local beneficiation guidelines, Osher Fuels has directly sub-contracted the various community-based entities to assist with the distribution of water tanks, and construction of stands for the placement and installation of the water tanks".
The department says about 35 Small, Medium and Macro Enterprises (SMMEs) in the area have benefited and vows to ensure that there is provision of water supply in the area and that all water infrastructure projects reach completion.
