Counterfeit goods confiscated in NW─── MARVIN NTSANE 13:41 Fri, 19 Jun 2020
Counterfeit goods worth approximately R750 000 were confiscated by the police in Potchefstroom in the North West this week.
Police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, says this came during Covid-19 inspections and the police found suspected counterfeit goods at various businesses in Wandellaan, Lombard Street and around the taxi rank. She says the police took along brand managers to identify these counterfeit goods.
Myburgh says the goods that were confiscated includes clothing, shoes, boosters, tablets and many other household goods. She further says 15 business owners were given fines of R5000 each for contravening Section 1 and 2 of the Counterfeit Goods Act, 1997 (Act 37 of 1997).
She adds that the police did not arrest anyone, however, after a certain period of time they will go back to inspect again. If these businesses are found with counterfeit goods again, the owners will be subjected to arrest, she said. The Provincial Police Commissioner, Sello Kwena, congratulated members and appealed to business owners not to sell counterfeit goods. He says it is an illegal economic activity which will ultimately land them into trouble with the law.
