#CoronavirusNW: Public and private facilities bear #Covid19 brunt─── LUCKY NKUYANE 11:42 Wed, 24 Jun 2020
The surge in the rate of coronavirus infections continues to affect more public as well as private institutions in the North West.
This as more of them continue to suffer the effects of the virus which at most forces them to shut down for decontamination and contact tracing, amongst others.
The latest to bear the brunt of the virus is the Traffic Department in the Rustenburg Local Municipality after an officer allegedly tested positive for Covid-19.
The officer is also amongst the tens in numbers of public and government professionals, to say the least, who have been affected by this virus which has so far killed 5 people and infected a cumulative number of 2,454 across the province.
Rustenburg’s municipal spokesperson, David Magae, says the licensing and testing station has been closed since Monday to allow other employees to also get tested for the coronavirus after the last case was confirmed.
“The Public is reminded that the municipality is working with the Department of Health on all Covid-19 cases, and persons who previously tested positive are in quarantine and regularly monitored by the officials from the department [and] additionally, the directorate has been assisting the department with all the relevant information, in respect of contact tracing, in line with the Covid-19 protocols.
Services at the municipality are anticipated to resume on Wednesday 23 June and the municipality will communicate in detail the service offerings to residents as well as the applicable modalities,” Magae further says.
The municipality also reminded residents that Covid-19 safety protocols are still in force, and as such, they are encouraged to adhere to social distancing, regular sanitisation and the use of a face mask in municipal facilities.
Meanwhile, according to the latest statistics by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, the province has 2,193 active cases after 256 patients recovered from the virus, and 5 deaths were recorded from the 2,545 reported case.
Amongst institutions that have been affected by the virus includes local Municipal offices, hospitals and schools in the province. Mines such as Harmony Gold in Klerksdorp and Sibanye Still Water Mines in Rustenburg also contributed immensely to the growing numbers of Covid-19 in North West.
