Women’s League defends ANC mayor | News Article

The executive mayor of the Matlosana Municipality – that includes Klerksdorp in North West – might be facing another motion of no confidence.

This is according to the ANC Women's League’s regional coordinator in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, Thembeka Chabalala. She accused ANC councillors in the region of colluding with opposition party members to oust the mayor, Maetu Kgaile.

He was removed as the mayor in 2018 - through a motion of no confidence - but returned after the intervention of ANC Deputy Secretary-General, Jessie Duarte. She was deployed by Luthuli House to deal with the matter. Chabalala further called on the ANC in the province to take decisive action and consider implementing similar actions that were taken against ANC councillors in Maluti-a-Phofung in the Free State. These councillors were dismissed from the party.

Chabalala said in the 2018 incident the ANC took no action against councillors with the hope that there will be stability within the ANC caucus. She said it now, however, seem that it was short-lived as the rogue elements within the ANC caucus are regrouping” and she asked the party to take action.

But the provincial structure of the Women’s League denied any threats to the mayoral position. Provincial Secretary, Bitsa Lenkopane, says the statement on the allegation is uninformed because as a deployee in the municipality she is not aware of such threats.
