This is according to Ward 26 Councillor, John Makhamba, who further stated that two shack fires were reported in Phelindaba on Saturday night.

He says while firefighters were attending to one fire - where two adults and a minor succumbed to the fire - they received a call that another shack was burning in the area. Fortunately, the occupant managed to escape unharmed.

Makhamba said although firefighters were at the scene within minutes, they could not manage to fight the fires early enough. He says they are currently awaiting a report from the police to determine what caused the fires.

Makhamba further encouraged communities to be vigilant and cautious during the winter to avoid tragedies like these.
