This newest closure brings the number of schools who closed their doors in the province to seven. According to provincial spokesperson for the Department of Education, Geoffrey van der Merwe, the Veritas High School in the Pixley ka Seme District was closed by the department last week Friday. He says other schools that were closed due to Covid-19 infections is Carnavon Primary School, Enoch Mthetho High School, Ikhwezi Lokusa Primary School, Phillipstown High School, Zingisani Primary School and Beacon Primary School.

Van der Merwe further stated that the Department of Health is currently conducting mass testing in the Pixley ka Seme District where the majority of these schools are situated. “We must emphasise that these are individual cases that have been reported and we are working with the Department of Health to establish the contact traces. Once a positive case is reported, the department immediately disinfects the school. We will further determine whether staff or learners at the affected schools will require psycho-social support and assist in this regard.” he explained.

The department further encourages educators, parents and learners to adhere to the COVID-19 regulations to help curb the spread of the virus.
