NW teacher strangled to death | News Article

A 25-year-old female teacher was allegedly strangled to death at her home near Moruleng in Moses Kotane Local Municipality in the North West.

The Education MEC in the province, Mmaphefo Matsemela, has described the murder of the Life Science teacher as heart-breaking. The murder of this 25-year-old teacher comes amidst gruesome murders of young women which are sending shock waves across the country. Other murders include that of the Central University of Technology (CUT) first-year student, Dimakatso Mokoena, who was found shot dead in a car in Bloemfontein in the Free State. MEC Matsemela has further described the death of North-West University graduate as an unfortunate incident which occurred at a time when the country is grappling with the chains of gender-based violence.

The female teacher was allegedly murdered on Monday 29 June 2020 and the police is said to have opened a murder case. It's not yet clear if the suspect in this case has been apprehended and the police are expected to comment soon.

"She comes from Makgobistad Village near Mafikeng originally, and was a Life Science teacher at Makoba Secondary School. After obtaining her education degree in 2018 at the North-West University's Mafikeng Campus, she started teaching at the beginning of 2019.

"On behalf of the department, I would like to convey my deepest condolences to the family and the entire school community," Matsemela says.

"It is heartbreaking to lose a young teacher who could have had a long career in teaching. Teachers play an important role in moulding the future of our country and as a society, we need to take good care of them and protect them. A nation without teachers is a doomed society. Teachers are a light to the community. I am appealing to the police to arrest the perpetrators of this heinous act. They should rot in jail," Matsemela adds.

The MEC is also expected to visit the family of the deceased in Makgobistad Village on Thursday 2 July.
