#Covid19: Safety in NW mines under scrutiny─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 10:19 Wed, 01 Jul 2020
NW Health MEC Madoda Sambatha, alongside Premier Mokgoro, will today meet with Minerals Council to discuss measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the province, specifically in the mining sector.
This, as the North West province now has 4187 confirmed Covid-19 cases with 651 recoveries and 7 deaths. The provincial health department has raised concern at the escalating number of positive cases in the mining sector, stating that Rustenburg alone has more than 50% of the confirmed coronavirus cases in the province.
Mokgoro and Sambatha will, after the meeting, proceed to open the 200-bed field hospital in Rustenburg.
Provincial Health spokesperson, Tebogo Lekgethwane, in a statement highlights that "the field hospital was built amid increasing cases of the coronavirus in the province, particularly in the Rustenburg Sub-District".
The two are expected to be joined by other Members of the Executive Council, District Mayors, the Members of the Mayoral Committee, and other roleplayers when they open the hospital.
Meanwhile, unions have called on Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe to ensure that mining companies prioritise the health of employees and abide by Covid-19 regulations.
