#CoronavirusFS: Old Age Home's workers down tools─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 12:17 Wed, 01 Jul 2020
A small group of disgruntled healthcare workers at the ‘Ons Tuiste Sentrum vir Bejaardes’ in Bloemfontein refuse to work, following an alleged coronavirus case at the Engo home.
The disgruntled group tells OFM News a fairly new patient who arrived on the premises last week Friday, tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday after collapsing at the home. The healthcare workers demand that employees – permanent and contract workers – be tested and placed in quarantine until the results are released.
They allege the employer has only agreed to have permanent employees tested due to a lack of funds. The first group of healthcare workers underwent testing at a laboratory near Universitas Hospital on Tuesday.
Ons Tuiste, on the other hand, is yet to comment on the above-mentioned allegations via a formal statement. Management is expected to do so soon. The Free State Health Department says the Mangaung Health Tracer Team is following up on this matter today, acknowledging that they received numerous calls from panicked employees at Ons Tuiste, much like OFM News.
The coronavirus outbreak in Bloemfontein is fast gaining traction, as three more police officials at Mangaung police station have tested positive for COVID-19 this week. The police station has been effectively closed for the third time in June as a result of the confirmed cases. This is in addition to the closure of three schools and three key government offices or buildings in Bloemfontein this week alone.
The number of active cases in the Free State sits at 1120, with the vast majority of those cases being found in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, which includes Bloemfontein.
