#SchoolsReopening: Fire damages NW school | News Article

The North West Education Department confirms that three classrooms were burned at the Ramaine-A-Phetlhu Secondary School in Mahikeng in North West earlier this week.

The department's spokesperson, Elias Malindi, says these classrooms were planned to accommodate the grade 11’s for the phased returning of learners next week.  He says the roof and furniture of these classrooms are badly damaged.

Malindi further explains to OFM News that this school does not have a security guard. He says due to the department's inadequate budget security officers are only deployed at special schools, boarding schools, as well as schools in hot spot areas. A case of arson has been opened, according to Malindi, and no arrests have been made yet.

Meanwhile, the North West Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela, is appealing to the community to assist in identifying the culprit. She says “this is a setback for learners for the remainder of the academic year”.

This comes after four classrooms, a library and an office for the deputy principal at the George Madoda Primary School in Tsaing sub-district were set alight last month. “The four classrooms were being used by Grade 7 learners, as a result the classes were placed on hold until an alternative is established,” Malindi said.
