This is due to a lack of masks that fit grade R learners.

The MEC of Education in the province, Mmaphefo Matsemela, says the department’s procured masks do not fit grade R learners.

She says after consultations with the Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, the province has opted to delay the return of grade R learners.

Matsemela states that school principals and parents will be informed of the new return date of grade R learners in the province.

She further says after assessing the state of readiness of schools in the province, saving the lives of learners and adjusting to the new normal is a priority.

She says “the department will adjust the reopening phasing in based on the risk-adjusted strategy which is considered an attempt to balance the approach of school reopening, taking into account all factors that affect them such as the implementation of the Annual Teaching Plans (ATPs).”

This comes after Motshekga announced earlier this week that Grade R, 6 and 11 will return to school on Monday 6 July 2020.
