Free State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, says approximately 34 schools have been affected by Covid-19 in the province.

Addressing the media at the Tsoseletso High School where at least two Grade 12 learners are confirmed to have contracted the virus, Makgoe said they are pleased there has not been any fatalities and that most learners that had the virus recovered.

He alludes that learners from Grey College Secondary School and Heatherdale Secondary School, who were quarantined, have all recovered and schooling continues normally. He urges parents and guardians to note that as cases continue to surge countrywide, more and more schools will be affected. Makgoe, further assures the public that all Covid-19 regulations and safety measures are adhered to at schools in the province.

“The reality is that the coronavirus is spreading and it is affecting many of the schools. In some cases it is learners and in other cases it is teachers. The most important thing is that there are systems in schools - there is screening and we are able to detect cases”.

He says the Department of Health has started with contact tracing at Tsoseletso High School and that he has directed Grade 11s not to return to the school until further notice. This, as 43 357 Grade 11 learners across the province were expected to resume with their studies this morning.

Makgoe says they have noted that there is also a lot of anxiety and people are worried, but confirms they are providing psychosocial support to learners affected.
