#CoronavirusFS: Department tries to allay nurses' anxiety | News Article

The Free State Department of Health tried to allay protesting nurses' anxiety after an employee at the National Hospital in Bloemfontein in the Free State tested positive for Covid-19.

The department's spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, confirmed that the affected worker is a nurse. He also added that a queue marshal at this hospital is also awaiting test results. This has led to the nurses at this hospital protesting, calling for the hospital to be closed.

“The department urges all health workers to always follow procedure in case they do not understand how Covid-19 cases are handled at the workplace. Whenever there is a confirmed positive Covid-19 case, the department cannot close a health facility. We have to first conduct a risk assessment to classify people as either high, medium or low risk. In many incidents, the health workers have been claiming to be at high risk but then their test results come back negative. Which means they were not high-risk people initially.”

He urges the workers to follow the rules and regulations and to be governed by scientific facts. He also says people should remove the fear that by virtue of being in a health facility where people tested positive for Covid-19, they will automatically be infected, which is not the case. He further urges people to use their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times as it will protect them from any possibility of acquiring the virus.
