#FSBudget: Over R12m for artists─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 08:16 Wed, 08 Jul 2020
Thousands of artists and athletes in the Free State battling to make ends meet amidst the Covid-19 pandemic can soon breathe a sigh of relief.
Finance MEC Gadija Brown has allocated an additional R12.5 million relief fund to the Provincial Arts, Culture and Recreation Department for artists and various sporting codes.
This comes at the backdrop of a national outcry, with many stating that lockdown measures have left the entertainment and sports industry in a dire situation.
Minister Nathi Mthethwa had, during level 5 of the lockdown, announced that a Covid-19 relief fund of R150 million in the sports, arts and cultural sector was set up, to give creatives in the arts industry a cushion during the hard lockdown.
However, many resorted to social media to express their dissatisfaction - highlighting that they have not seen a single cent.
OFM News catches up with one of the prominent artists and music production company owner in the Free State, Hloni Mokoena, on what the allocation by Brown would mean to himself and thousands other creatives
