Candlelight memorial for slain NW officer | News Article

Women in Kanana near Orkney in the North West will on Thursday hold a candlelight memorial in honour of a slain female police officer.

Mamokete Mogori and a group of women in that area have organised themselves following the brutal murder of the 41-year-old Sergeant, Martha Mamoitoyi Bouwer.

Mogori says this is in solidarity with Bouwer, whose body was found by her colleagues in a pool of blood with multiple injuries after she failed to report for duty. Her brutal murder shook social media as it brought back more sad and painful memories of women who recently perished at the hands of their loved ones across South Africa. Police spokesperson in the province, Sabata Mokgwabone, says her murder is still under investigation to determine who is responsible for her brutal murder.

A 40-year-old man, Sando Khandile, said to be her boyfriend, was apparently the last person to be seen with the slain officer and has since committed suicide. His body was found hanging from a tree in Orkney. Bouwer's vehicle was found abandoned in the vicinity of a mall in Klerksdorp.

Facebook users, especially women, called for men to stop killing women and children. Other users urged men to stand and fight the scourge of gender-based violence towards women and children.

Scores of women have been either killed or raped in 2020 and the latest includes two separate incidents. A two-year-old girl was raped while in isolation at the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Pretoria. Another 12-year-old was raped in Bulwer, KwaZulu-Natal. According to police, the girl was allegedly raped by a 17-year-old while in the Mahohoho area in Donnybrook on Monday.
