#CoronavirusNW: Health MEC to test for #Covid19 | News Article

The Health MEC in the North West will on Friday undergo coronavirus testing. This comes after the late MEC Gordon Kegakilwe, MEC Saliva Molapisi, and premier Job Mokgoro all tested positive for the virus.

On Thursday, Sambatha revealed that he is a suspected Covid-19 contact of three cases of the virus, involving Premier Mokgoro and two these two MECs. Sambatha said he is now in isolation with no symptoms and continues to work online, while he is set to go for testing on Friday. On Tuesday, Mokgoro’s spokesperson Vuyisile Ngesi announced in a statement that the premier had instructed members of the support staff, who worked with him closely in the past two weeks, to test for the virus while taking the necessary precautions.

Kegakilwe died on Monday after a cardiac arrest due to Covid-19 complications at a hospital in Klerksdorp while Molapisi and Mokgoro are recovering in quarantine. His death comes amidst a surge in the rate of infections and a rise in the death toll among Covid-19 patients in the province. Meanwhile, residents in the province have been issued with a red alert during the sharp increase in the number of positive cases and deaths. MEC Sambatha further warned them to abide by Covid-19 regulations by keeping social distancing, wearing masks, sanitising and avoiding unnecessary travel.
