Eskom suspends Masilonyana power cuts─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 10:57 Tue, 14 Jul 2020
Residents in Theunissen, Brandfort, Winburg, and Verkeerdevlei in the Free State will now be spared from daily 14-hour planned power interruptions.
This, after the Masilonyana Local Municipality has made a sufficient payment to Eskom. The municipality, which is more than R74 million indebted to Eskom, was on June 26 issued with a notice stating the power utility's intention to interrupt power supply due the municipality's failure to honour their payment agreement.
The power utility’s spokesperson in the province, Stefanie Jansen van Rensburg, says in efforts to get the municipality to adhere to its agreement and to reduce escalating municipal debts, the municipality was to experience daily scheduled electricity outages as of tomorrow, should the municipality have failed to make any payment. Jansen van Rensburg, however, says they are pleased to announce that planned electricity supply restriction to the Masilonyana Local Municipality have been suspended.
She adds "negotiations to address the amounts in arrears continue and a payment agreement should be finalised soon".
Jansen van Rensburg warns the municipality's adherence to their payment agreement will be strictly monitored and that a 14-day notice of supply restriction will be implemented, should the municipality fail to honour the agreement.
