Winburg sexual assault cases: Three arrested─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 12:53 Fri, 17 Jul 2020
Three people between the ages of 19 and 25 have been arrested in connection with three separate rape incidents in the Winburg area.
Free State police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele tells OFM News the suspects were arrested on Thursday following a cell phone tracing operation that was led by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences division, known as the FCS team, stationed in Bultfontein.
Makhele says three cell phones, believed to belong to the rape victims, were recovered in the arrests. He elaborates on the suspects’ alleged modus operandi.
In two of the cases the suspects took victims to the spot between the graveyard and stadium in Winburg’s Makeleketla township where they would rape and rob them of their cell phones.
“The third incident was, however, different and the incident took place at the victim's home in a pit toilet where she was also raped and robbed of her cell phone,” explains Makhele.
The suspects will appear before the Winburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
