#SchoolViolence: Grade 12 learner suspended in NW | News Article

A grade 12 learner has been suspended for allegedly assaulting a teacher at the Motswedi Secondary School in Zeerust in the North West.

It is alleged that the incident happened during a meeting to inform the learners about a temporary closure of the school late last week. In a statement, the Provincial Education Department spokesperson, Elias Malindi, states that the learner allegedly head-butted the teacher during the commotion that was caused by the announcement of the school’s closure, following a confirmed positive coronavirus case amongst the teachers. Malindi further says that this learner is expected to have a disciplinary hearing this week.

OFM News In 2018 reported that a teenage boy fatally stabbed Gadimang Mokolobate, who was a mathematics teacher, at the Ramotshere Technical High School in Dinokana outside Zeerust.

The Education MEC, Maphefo Matsemela, says "this behavior of learners assaulting teachers is totally unacceptable. In 2018, an educator was stabbed to death by a learner in the same sub-district and we cannot allow such deplorable behavior to resurface in our schools. As a department, we view this as a very serious offence to be committed by learners. Teachers are parents to learners while they are in school and no child will be allowed to raise a hand towards them. l have instructed the officials of the department to ensure that a disciplinary hearing takes place as soon as possible against all learners involved in the incident", said MEC Matsemela.
