#Coronavirus: Buildings closed in central SA | News Article

The rapid increase in the rate of coronavirus cases continues to have an impact on the provincial government’s capacity to deliver services to millions of residents of central South Africa.

This follows after the temporary closures of the two government buildings in the Northern Cape and one in the Free State due to confirmed positive covid-19 cases.

The department of Employment and Labour’s national spokesperson, Teboho Thejane, says employees at the Kimberly and Upington offices have tested positive for the virus, which has led to the closure of the office today. Meanwhile Thejane says in the Free State, the Welkom office has also been closed after a female employee tested positive. He adds that these employees are currently receiving necessary medical support.

Thejane further states that contact tracing has been done and the affected individuals will go on mandatory ten days self-isolation. He says that Northern Cape offices will be closed until further notice and the Welkom office will reopen on Friday following decontamination processes.

“The Welkom office’s employee notified her supervisors that a close family member had tested positive for Covid-19 earlier last week,” says Thejane. “She was since advised not to report for duty until the status of her contraction had been determined.

“On Friday 17 July 2020, the official confirmed that she too has tested positive for Covid-19.”

He adds that due to nature of her occupation, 20 other employees at this office will go for a mandatory self-isolation. The office is expected to reopen on Friday, 24 July 2020.
