Alleged NW arsonists due in court | News Article

A group of 17 alleged arsonists is expected to appear before the Mmabatho Magistrate's Court in the North West on Wednesday.

The group were arrested on Tuesday by members of the Hawks in Ramosadi Village near Mmabatho.

They are alleged to have stormed and set alight two offices at the Provincial Department for Economic Development on Monday.

It's alleged that the group stormed the building and demanded to see the head of the department over alleged tender irregularities.

The provincial department has, however, brushed off these claims, saying any irregularities should be reported to the police.

Departmental spokesperson, Dumisa Seshabela, told OFM News she is not sure what could have led to the incident, and states that in terms of tender allegations, the country has good systems to deal with complaints regarding tender irregularities.

She adds these should have been reported to the police.

Their arrests come after MEC for the department, Kenetswe Mosenogi, called for the perpetrators to be brought to book.
