Billions allocated for FS Education | News Article

The Free State Education Department has allocated R15.61 billion for the 2020/2021 financial year.

The budget was announced by the acting Education MEC, Makalo Mohale, during the tabling of the virtual provincial education budget vote on Friday.

Mohale says a large amount will be stretched across the programmes for public special school education, early childhood development, and infrastructure development.

An additional R45 million has also been allocated to the department, which Mohale said will be used to enhance security at schools - especially during the time when matric catch-up programmes to rescue the 2020 academic year take place.

At least R21 million has also been allocated for procurement of 98 mobile classrooms across the five districts to reduce overcrowding in classes during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also added R70 million has been set aside for learner transport; R32 million has been allocated for procurement of laptops and training for teachers for e-learning purposes; R15.24 million has been allocated for provision of sanitary towels to girl leaners.
