#CoronavirusNW: Health workers amongst casualties | News Article

At least four North West healthcare professionals are among the 48 victims who have died due to coronavirus-related complications.

The Health Department MEC, Madoda Sambatha, confirms the death of two doctors and two nurses over the past week. Their deaths come as Covid-19 cases in the province continue to surge - with 470 patients admitted to hospitals across the province.

Sambatha says the contribution of these fallen health professionals - to the health care system and their service to people in the province - is greatly appreciated. The department adds these doctors and nurses are the first healthcare professionals to die due to Covid-19 related complications in the province.

The department says the doctors who died are Lomalisa Litenye, who specialised as a gynaecologist and obstetrician; and Florah Makama, a clinical psychologist – both who were based in Mahikeng.

Sambatha says the two nurses were employees of the Department of Health, with one based in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District and the other in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District.

“The death of these health professionals is a great loss to the department, but even more so to their loved ones and the department and the province would like to pay a tribute to these fallen health professionals.

“Their contribution to the health care system and service to the people is much appreciated, and I send my deep condolences to the loved ones, family, friends and colleagues of the departed."
