Informal traders in the Free State hard hit by the national lockdown regulations are now legible for financial aid from the provincial government.

Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs MEC, Makalo Mohale announced during the tabling of his 2020/2021 adjustment budget that these traders will receive Covid-19 relief packages.

In his live-streamed speech, Mohale said formal sector enterprises - making a minimum of R150 000 turnover - will receive assistance for operational costs and rental relief.

The informal sectors - such as spaza shops, general dealers and hawkers – who are also key players of the township economy – will receive vouchers. Mohale said these vouchers are redeemable at approved wholesalers and one of the commercial banks.

Hawkers qualifying for the Covid-19 relief package will also receive financial aid to buy stock. He concluded by saying waste pickers will be provided with a temporary relief which is yet to be finalized.
