The Police in Upington in the Northern Cape arrested two males roaming the streets past the curfew time on Monday in possession of a dozen boxes of liquor.

According to police spokesperson, Mohale Ramatseba, the SAPS members of the ZFM District Covid-19 team pursued the courier van to establish the reason for travelling after the lockdown regulation curfew. The police confiscated 354 litres of alcohol and the courier van was confiscated. Ramatseba says the pair made an appearance in the Upington Magistrate's Court yesterday and were released on bail. The case was postponed for further investigation.

‘’The possession of drugs is an offence, despite Disaster Management Act regulations. Transportation of liquor during this period is in contravention of the regulations and is tantamount to a penalty. Also traveling between 21:00 and 04:00 without a permit is in contravention of the curfew in terms of the regulations,’’ Ramatseba said.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Risimati Peter Shivuri, applauded the members for their alertness and responsive action. “The police are ready to do its bit to flatten the curve of the spread of the virus by ensuring compliance to the Disaster Management Act Regulations.”
