#FSBudget: Opposition questions Mashinini's department | News Article

Opposition parties in the Free State Legislature are calling for investigations into tender irregularities within the Police, Roads and Transport Department.

The DA, EFF and Freedom Front Plus called for action into incomplete road maintenance projects as well as into the Park Road Police Station in Bloemfontein. Reacting to a R2.685 billion budget tabled by MEC Sam Mashinini on Wednesday, the DA's Leona Kleynhans questioned the slow progress of renovations at the police station stating that there is not much to show for the R74 million that has been coughed up for its refurbishment. Kleynhans, during a virtual Legislature sitting, told the House the DA demands answers as to why the department has switched between three contractors since the renovations started and why the police station is incomplete to date.

The Freedom Front Plus, on the other hand, called for investigations into the establishment of the Metro Police in the province, stating that it is appalling the province does not have a metro police unit, despite the plan having been approved years ago and hundreds of trainees having already undergone the metro’s traffic learnership programme.

In addition to this, the EFF's Mandisa Makheseni told the House Mashinini needs to launch investigations against his own office, including those responsible for the issuing of Taxi Operating Licences. She said taxi associations are being sent from pillar to post by his department without much assistance. Makheseni further drew attention to the police system stating that the police remains underresourced and understaffed.
