A multi-million rand upgrading of the Free State Sports Science Institute and the admission of Olympic boxing coaches from Cuba is set to be key in the development of boxing in the Free State.

Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Limakatso Mahasa announced that the Free State Academy of Sport has been instructed to accommodate the programme for Free State Amateur Boxers on a 5-year residential plan. The tabled budget will finance an effort to upgrade the current talent as well as enable the department to attract international support. Mahasa announced a R21,877 million injection for the 2020/21 financial year to steer ahead the performance of sport in the province.

Talking about the Free State Sport Confederation (FSSC), MEC Mahasa mentioned the 2019/20 financial year plan when the FSSC received R2,206 million, which was used to support District Sport Councils, Provincial Sport Federations and the organisation of the administration.

"The confederation not only acts as the controlling body for sports and recreation in the Free State, but also as an autonomous body that exists for the sake of fair, comprehensive and coordinated sports provision within the province," concluded Mahasa.
